Barcamp is een unconference die breekt met de regels van een gewone conferentie. Barcamp wordt (bijna) ad hoc georganiseerd. Voor alle deelnemers is het evenement volledig gratis, en je krijgt er soms nog eten bovenop. Maar dat komt er natuurlijk niet zomaar. Een geslaagde editie is een editie waar iedereen participeert. Een presentatie geven, foto’s maken, sponsoren, meehelpen met de organisatie, wifi installeren, koffiekopen als ontbijt meebrengen, interviews nemen voor een podcastreeks, podcasts maken, den boel wat opruimen, een after-barcamp event organiseren,….

Op dit ogenblik zijn we vooral op zoek naar mensen die hun flip (of ander materiaal waarmee je filmpjes kan maken die nadien in imovie bewerkt kunnen worden) willen meebrengen en die hem die dag een paar uurtjes kunnen missen (of zelf meewerken aan het ‘maak een filmpje van iedereen aanwezig project’ van Anne).

The first Belgian Barcamp outside of Brussels will take place in slightly more than 3 months in Gent. Organizer is Thomas Bouve, and the event takes place in the offices of IBBT (Zuiderpoort Office Park, Gent).

Barcamp Brussels #4 took place yesterday in mVillage. How do I, as organizer, feel about the event?

First of all, yes, a lot of people who put themselves on the attendee list did not show up. Some people had indicated on the Wiki that they could not attend, but most just stayed home. This meant we had too much food and T-shirts. The food was given to those who need it more (thank you, Anne) and the T-shirts, well, that’s a lot of excess textile.
Something that also bothered me is that, while the previous time the speaker slots were quickly filled up, this time I had to actually go and find people to do a presentation. I guess there were a lot of ‘lurkers’ present.

On the positive side, I got a lot of nice reactions on the topics and the event itself from those present. I actually could attend some presentations myself, and particularly liked the one by Yves Hanoulle and Patrick Debois, both about the social aspects of IT organisations.

Moreover, I got a lot of help from people without even asking. I’m thinking about Anne, Bea, Beate, Francois, Frank, Johannes, Mich, Miel, Pascal, Robin, Simon, Yves (and I’m probably forgetting some). That was really the best part of the experience for me, the real ‘everyone participates’ feeling.

Four days to go! Let’s have a recap of all you need to know:

PRESENTATIONS

• Presentations should be in English.
• We’ll have 4 rooms, one really big one, two medium ones and a small one.
• The presentation schedule is filled in between 9AM and 10AM, on a first come-first served basis. You can always swap slots and rooms with other presenters, but if you arrive at 9:57AM, chances are, it will be full!
• If you have a Powerpoint/Keynote slideshow, please put a copy on Slideshare and send me the link
• I would like video recordings of the presentations, but I cannot make them myself. So if you’re not presenting anything, this might be a way to help out! Please send me the GoogleVideo links afterwards!

STUFF WE NEED

• we still need some stuff like projectors, Wifi routers and extra coffee machines. I’ve put a list here: barcampbrussels.wikispaces.com - put your name next to items you can take care of, your support is really appreciated!

It’s decided! Barcamp Brussels #4 will take place on Saturday Dec 1st, in the mVillage business center in Schaarbeek, close to the Koninginneplein, Kruidtuin/Botanique and the Brussels North station (thanks for the help, Simon, and the tip Pascal).

Put it in your agendas! There are currently 56 people on the Barcamp Brussels attendee list, and I sure would like that list to be longer still. So a mentioning on your blog would be nice!

It’s almost been 6 months, so here we go for the 4th time: I’m starting the preparations for Barcamp Brussels #4.

Barcamp Brussels is over and it looks like most feedback is positive. Some remarks I made in the back of my mind for next time:

1. WIFI. Some venues are just not equipped to handle 80 geeks with laptops, N95s and even a Nikon camera with 802.11g. We should manage Wifi ourselves and install multiple access points. Creating a separate ‘priority’ network (with separate password) for the vital applications (like on-line demo) was a good set-up.
2. SEATS. We missed the comfy seats of e.g. the SAP Lounge. There should be space for hanging out and talking/browsing/hacking.
3. ENTERTAINMENT. The TwitterCamp screen set up by Werner and Thomas was a nice application, but maybe there should be some kind of ‘amusement’ track that runs next to the three presentation tracks. Games? Hackathon? Photography? Music?
